This workshop focuses on creating forms specifically designed to thrive in a wood kiln and soda firing environment. Guided by Suzy Dunser, participants will explore clay selection, form, and surface in relation to the firing process.
We’ll cover which clays suit different effects, shapes that respond well in atmospheric firings, and how to design pieces that interact successfully with flame, ash and soda. The session will also include tips for surface treatments, adding functional and aesthetic details, and minimising issues such as warping or glaze running.
Suitable for both hand-builders and wheel-throwers, this workshop is ideal for anyone preparing work for a wood firing or wanting to better understand how making decisions affect fired outcomes.
Participants should bring the usual tools, and clay will be available to purchase at the studio.
Bring along a shared kai for lunch — a great chance to connect and chat with others in the workshop.
This workshop pairs well with Glazing for Wood Firing on the 22nd of August, which explores surface approaches to complement the forms you create.
