DESCRIPTION:This workshop focuses on creating forms specifically designed to\nthrive in a wood kiln and soda firing environment. Guided by Suzy\nDunser, participants will explore clay selection, form, and surface in\nrelation to the firing process.\n\nWe’ll cover which clays suit different effects, shapes that respond\nwell in atmospheric firings, and how to design pieces that interact\nsuccessfully with flame, ash and soda. The session will also include\ntips for surface treatments, adding functional and aesthetic details,\nand minimising issues such as warping or glaze running.\n\nSuitable for both hand-builders and wheel-throwers, this workshop is\nideal for anyone preparing work for a wood firing or wanting to better\nunderstand how making decisions affect fired outcomes.\n\nParticipants should bring the usual tools, and clay will be available\nto purchase at the studio.\n\n_Bring along a shared kai for lunch — a great chance to connect and\nchat with others in the workshop._\n\nThis workshop pairs well with _Glazing for Wood Firing_\n[https://www.eventspronto.co.nz/glazing_wood_2026] on the 22nd of\nAugust, which explores surface approaches to complement the forms you\ncreate.\n\n \n\nABOUT YOUR TUTOR — SUZY DUNSER\n\nSuzy Dunser is a Paeroa-based ceramic artist, tutor, and long-standing\ncontributor to the New Zealand pottery community. She completed the\nOtago Polytechnic Diploma in Ceramics in 2011 and has since worked\nextensively as both a maker and educator, teaching workshops around\nthe country.\n\nHer practice centres on functional ware, with a particular interest in\nthoughtful, well-resolved forms that elevate everyday objects. Suzy\nworks across a range of clays and firing methods, with a strong\npassion for wood and salt/soda firing. \n\nShe has held leadership roles within the ceramics community, including\nserving as President of Auckland Studio Potters, and now serves on the\nWaikato Society of Potters committee as Secretary. Suzy is also an\nexperienced wood-firing practitioner and kiln firemaster.\n\n \n\nTERMS AND CONDITIONS\n\nThe Waikato Society of Potters (WSP) reserves the right to cancel a\nclass if it fails to achieve minimum enrolment numbers, for reasons\noutside of our control. A full refund will be given if the class is\ncancelled by the WSP less a 5% credit card fee. If a student cancels\ntheir enrolment within 72 hours of the first class starting, no refund\nwill be given. If a student cancels their booking less than 7 days\nprior to the event a 50% administration charge will be deducted from\nthe refund. Should a student cancel their enrolment any time prior to\nthe above a 20% administration fee will be deducted from the refund.\n\n_Please read the WSP code of conduct. Confirming your booking\nindicates that you have understood and agree to comply with them._\n - manager@waikatopotters.co.nz - https://www.eventspronto.co.nz/making_wood_2026
