The focus of this class will be on surface decoration techniques rather than making. If you are new to pottery, you will be guided through pottery basics, but the primary focus of the teaching will be on the decorating. If you are mostly interested in learning to make objects, we recommend you enrol in one of our handbuilding or wheel throwing classes first.

Over 8 weeks, you will learn a wide variety of techniques to decorate your pottery including but not limited to the following:

Making stamps
Marbling effects with slip and underglaze
Plaster milds for making and decorating
Soft clay decorations and tricks - eg. shapes, imprints, inclusions of media, making test tiles
Mixing up your own bought powder glaze, tricks on how to yes it and incorporate WSP glazes
Agateware
Sgraffito
Monoprinting
Troubleshooting - broken pots, glaze runs, bare patches

The cost includes small amounts of stains. Firing and clay incur the usual extra fees depending on volume.

Bring:

You will need to supply your own dust mask – industrial quality if possible (it’s a good investment in your lung health anyway). Powdered glaze for mixing if you have one but we have some in the studio for demonstration. Bucket (10L+) with watertight lid to mix into. Silicon spatula.

Terms and Conditions

Cancellation policy: The Waikato Society of Potters (WSP) reserves the right cancel a class if it fails to achieve minimum enrolment numbers, for reasons outside of our control. A full refund will be given if the class is cancelled by the WSP less a 5% credit card fee. If a student cancels their enrolment within 72 hours of the first class starting, no refund will be given. If a student cancels their booking less than 7 days prior to the event a 50% administration charge will be deducted from the refund. Should a student cancel their enrolment any time prior to the above a 20% administration fee will be deducted from the refund.
