Ever wanted to sit down at the wheel and actually make something? This is your chance.
Sundays, 10am–1pm for 4 weeks, starting 18th October 2026
* Please note there won't be a class on 25th October due to the Labour Weekend holiday, so the last class will be on 15th November.
Tutored by the wonderful Sarah Steed, this taster course takes you from "what do I do with my hands" to centring, throwing, and trimming your own pieces on the wheel — plus you'll learn how to glaze them ready for the kiln. It's hands-on, it's a little bit messy, and it's honestly one of the most satisfying skills you'll ever pick up.
By the end of four weeks you'll have the confidence (and clay-covered enthusiasm) to either dive into one of our longer wheel courses next term, or bring your new skills along to Play with Clay for some self-directed throwing time.
Cost of clay and firing is additional to the course fee.

Your Tutor
Sarah Steed is a local professional artist with a broad background. Having studied ceramics in the UK, Sarah went on to graduate from The Norwich School of Art with a BA hons Fine Arts Degree in sculpture. Sarah has taught a variety of ceramic classes to both children and adults.
Terms and Conditions
The Waikato Society of Potters (WSP) reserves the right to cancel a class if it fails to achieve minimum enrolment numbers, for reasons outside our control. A full refund will be given if the class is cancelled by the WSP less a 5% credit card fee. If a student cancels their enrolment within 72 hours of the first class starting, no refund will be given. If a student cancels their booking less than 7 days prior to the event, a 50% administration charge will be deducted from the refund. Should a student cancel their enrolment any time prior to the above, a 20% administration fee will be deducted from the refund.
WSP does not provide make-up sessions or credits for classes that you have missed due to your personal circumstances.less
