Muka ties are a wonderfully natural alternative to the conventional clamps that are used to secure a newborn baby's pito (umbilical cord). Muka fibre is extracted from Harakeke with a mussel shell by a scraping technique known as 'hāro', then twined together through the process of 'miro'. The Muka tie is soft against babys skin and the many antibacterial properties found within Muka allow baby's pito to heal efficiently. The muka tie can be kept as a keepsake, no nasty cold plastic clamps against baby's skin. And no plastic ending up in land fill.

The workshop will start with a karakia, learn how to harvest harakeke (flax) correctly. Extract the muka and create muka ptio ties. Take home your creations with print outs to carry on at home.
