DESCRIPTION:Visible or invisible? Which heritage is celebrated through monuments\nand what is invisible?\n\nPRE- BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL, NO DOOR SALES\n\nHistorian Jock Phillips will draw on his research for ‘A History of\nNew Zealand in 100 objects’(Penguin 2022), his history New Zealand\nwar memorials, To the Memory (Potton Burton 2015) and a database he\nhas developed of New Zealand memorials. Recently there have been\nattacks on monuments in Britain to philanthropists whose fortunes came\nfrom the slave trade and colonial ventures. A memorial to William\nWakefield, one of the founders of the New Zealand Company, in a corner\nof Wellington’s Basin Reserve, was recently referred to as marking a\n‘sordid history’.\n https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/300814579/the-sordid-history-behind-the-basin-reserves-wakefield-memorial\nYet many major historical events have no physical monuments. Decisions\nabout whether to create memorials provide insights into what the\nsociety chooses to remember, and what they allow to be forgotten. \n\nCanapes provided, cash bar available\n\nThis meeting will also be a registered event, which Rotary Club of\nWellington is hosting, as part of the Wellington Heritage Festival\n2023. Rotary Club of Wellington and other Rotary Clubs have had a\nsignificant leadership role in the Heritage Festival this year.\n\n \n\n \n - secretary@rcw.org.nz - https://www.eventspronto.co.nz/jockphillips
