DESCRIPTION:[Rongoa]\n\nTaonga pūoro produce organic sounds viewed as the ancestral language\nof Aotearoa and the land, taking the listener and tuned ear into\nancient times, being wrapped up in voices originating from aeons ago.\n\nCome and share in this amazing immersive wānanga, made possible by\nthe Haumanu Collective. Lead by two renowned crafters and musicians,\ndedicated to the revitalisation and preservation of taonga pūoro.\n\nTUTORS: JO’EL KOMENE AND TĀMIHANA KĀTENE\nDATE: SUNDAY, 9TH OCTOBER\nTIME: 10AM – 3PM\nWhere: The Creative Campus\nPrice: $50\nAll ages (5 - 15 must be accompanied by an adult and be booked into\nworkshop)\n\nThis 5 hour workshop will introduce you to the different families of\ntraditional Māori musical instruments with a discussion about each.\nConstruction techniques and materials, whakapapa (genealogical links)\nas well as tikanga (protocols) surrounding traditional performance\nusing taonga pūoro. Demonstrations will embellish this workshop.\n\nAfter a two-hour kōrero and break for a catered lunch, participants\nwill spend two hours making three different taonga pūoro and learning\nhow to play them with tuition and guidance in the making process and\nplaying techniques. Participants will also be invited to contribute to\na group performance using the taonga pūoro they have made and/or\nplaying the Rōreka - Jo'el Komene collection.\n\nTĀMIHANA KĀTENE – NGĀTI TOA RANGATIRA, NGĀTI TAMA, NGĀTI KOATA,\nTE TAOŪ - NGĀTI WHATUA\nFor over 20 years, Tāmihana has been involved in the reinvigoration\nof Taonga Puoro within the Wellington region. As a carver of wood,\nstone and bone Tāmihana has spent this time focusing on the study and\nrecreation of traditional Taonga Puoro, with the intent of\nreintroducing and strengthening its use within traditional Māori\ncultural practices. \n\nTāmihana has lead and taught many community-based wānanga exploring\nthe creation of Taonga Puoro, their associated pūrakau(stories) and\ntheir use as musical instruments. Outside of this environment, he has\nalso frequented Te Kōkī, The New Zealand School of Music, as a guest\nlecturer in Ethomusicology studies and as a teacher of performance,\nparticularly within Haka, moteatea and Taonga Puoro.\n\nTāmihana’s passion for Tikanga and Te Reo have lead him to the\ncomposition of karakia and moteatea, specifically used to encapsulate\nand retain the knowledge pertaining to Taonga Puoro. These resources\nwill serve as a set of tools to ensure that intergenerational\nlearnings will be passed on from our tūpuna\n\nJO’EL KOMENE - NGĀ PUHI, TAPUIKA, TAINUI\nJo’el is a taonga pūoro artist based in Tauranga, New Zealand. He\nhas assisted in the revival of taonga pūoro having facilitated\nnumerous wānanga exhibited whakairo taonga pūoro (carved\ninstruments) in several exhibitions, recorded taonga pūoro for a\nnumber of organisations including Māori Television, Māori radio and\nlocal establishments; performed live using taonga pūoro in a range of\ncontexts and practised Māori musical traditions in fulfilling his\ngreater goal of assisting in the revival and maintenance of taonga\npūoro on marae (Māori meeting places) and appropriately in broader\ncontexts.\n\nHerea ngā hana o te Rā ki te tenga o te korokoro.\n\nMauri Tū,\nMauri Oro,\nMauri Ora!\n - workshops@theincubator.co.nz - https://www.eventspronto.co.nz/roreka
