DESCRIPTION:WHENUA AND HARAKEKE — EARTH AND FLAX\n\nA MATARIKI EVENT WITH DAVE AUSTIN AND SEMA MORRIS\n\nA two-day workshop taking place on:\nSaturday 27th June, 10am - 4pm\nAND\nSaturday 18th July 2026, 10am - 4pm\n\nThis workshop explores the creative relationship between clay and\nflax, combining the earthy strength of ceramics with the organic\ntexture and movement of woven natural fibres. Students will experiment\nwith sculptural and functional forms that blend traditional and\ncontemporary practices, creating tactile works that celebrate material\ncontrast, storytelling, and connection to the natural world.\nSpecifically, how we can join flax to the clay work.\n\nThis workshop is planned so you can take part in the WSP Matariki Pit\nFiring event on Saturday the 11th of July, if you want to use this\nmethod to fire your pots. Normal electric firing is still available if\nyou prefer.\n\nNote: While every effort is made to accommodate your vision, this\nclass is a taster into working with Harakeke (flax), exploring simple\nweaving, joins, rope, etc. You should not expect to learn complex\npatterns as the art of weaving takes a long time to master. \n\nDay 1:\n\n *\n10am to 12am: Discussion about how to proceed with your vision \n\n *\n12am to 1pm: Shared kai (bring a plate to share if you have the\ncapacity)\n\n *\n1pm to 4pm: Making our pots.\n\n Day 2:\n\n *\n10am to 4pm: Weaving and joining flax creations to the clay work\n\n *\nBring a kai to share again :)\n\nNgaa mihi nui\nDave and Sema\n - info@waikatopotters.co.nz - https://www.eventspronto.co.nz/whenuaflax-jun26
