DESCRIPTION:A limited number of spaces are available to share the use of the kiln\non this upcoming wood firing. \n\nThe wood will need to be collected, prep'd and stacked a month\nearlier (end of March) to ensure it is dry on the day. The firing\ncoordinator will be in touch with participants to organise a date for\nthis. \n\nThe other dates to be available for prep, firing and unloading are:\nSATURDAY 14TH MARCH: Prep day: organise wood, prep shelves and kiln \nSATURDAY 21ST MARCH: packing kiln\nSUNDAY 22ND: firing kiln\nSATURDAY 28TH MARCH: grinding shelves and unloading kiln\n\nYou will need to bring at least a banana box amount of work for the\nkiln.\nPlease glaze your pieces prior to 21st March so that they're ready to\nload.\n\nThe total cost for a standard wood firing is $520. A deposit of $30\n(members) or $50 (non-members) must be paid in advance to secure a\nspace in the firing. The balance of the firing cost is to be\ndistributed amongst the participants based on how much space their\npieces take up in the kiln. The fire master is in charge of\ndistributing the cost between the participants, This will be\napportioned on unloading day, and then invoiced to each participant by\nthe WSP Manager. The cost includes glaze materials, contribution to\nkiln maintenance, studio use, admin and firemaster fees.\n\nTO POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS:\n\nWhether this is your first wood-firing experience or you are a\nseasoned Phoenix fan, here are some points for you to\nconsider/remember before enrolling:\n\nThe firing process takes 4 days. You will be involved in all 4 days.\nDay 1 – preparation (wood organisation, shelf and prop washing,\nwadding prep)\nDay 2 – wadding and loading pots into the kiln\nDay 3 – firing\nDay 4 – unloading and clean up\n\nYour pots need to be made from high-firing stoneware clay. Some clays\nare labelled as “stoneware” but are in fact mid-firing clays.\nPlease check – clays used need a firing range up to at least\n1280C. Download a list of suitable clays usually available at WSP\nand information on slips\n[https://www.eventspronto.co.nz/vdb/document/520]. You must be able to\nidentify the clay used for it to be accepted into the kiln. We will\nalso send you some guidelines as to suitable sizes and shapes of pots.\n\nSorry, no previously fired pots (i.e.  re-fires) will go into the\nkiln.\n\nPlease ensure you use only cone 10 glazes. Appropriate WSP Studio\nglazes are identified by “stoneware” and "cone 10" written on the\nbucket lid.\n - info@waikatopotters.co.nz - https://www.eventspronto.co.nz/woodfire_mar_2026
